The leading crypto currencies cratered, with bitcoin dropping 16% in a single week, putting it down by more than half from its peak six months earlier. On the macro front, inflation had shown no sign of easing, and the central bank remained committed to raising rates as much as would be required to slow the increase in consumer prices. Sanctioned entities and jurisdictions together accounted for a combined $14.9 billion worth of transaction volume in 2023, which represents 61.5% of all illicit transaction volume we measured on the year. Most of this total is driven by cryptocurrency services that were sanctioned by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), or are located in sanctioned jurisdictions, and can continue to operate because they’re in jurisdictions where U.S. sanctions are not enforced.

The impact of halving on miners have driven some to ask if bitcoin mining is profitable in the long term. Mining requires a substantial upfront investment, and because there are a lot of variables involved with the practice, a high profit isn’t guaranteed. Escalating energy costs, coupled with the environmental consequences associated with mining, have added to the growing skepticism surrounding the financial viability of mining operations. Whereas the aforementioned funds were either gimmicky or very narrowly defined (few internet stocks existed in the 1990s), bitcoin is a straightforward and reasonably mainstream asset. Its proponents regard it as digital gold, a commodity that serves as a store of value.
